Dance is the hidden language of the soul
This dance form is for anyone who loves dancing.
You don’t need to know how to dance or you may think that you are a terrible dancer or you may be very experienced.
The only thing you need to have is a body that breathes!
Based on elements of the 5 rhythms developed by Gabrielle
Roth in the 1960s this form of dance is a movement
meditation that draws from many indigenous and world
traditions in using tenets of shamanistic, ecstatic, mystical
and eastern philosophy. It also draws from Gestalt therapy
and the human potential movement and transpersonal
psychology.
Fundamental to the practice is
the idea that everything is energy and moves in waves, patterns and rhythms.
The Rhythms are
Flowing
Staccato
Chaos
Lyrical
Stillness
When danced together they create a “Wave”.
Each rhythm relates to different moods, elements, cycles in
life, emotions and they are expressed on the dance floor
through different ways of moving to five distinctive styles of
music.
Flowing
Earth.
Coming home to the self in the body. Tuning in.
Simply being. A state of being grounded and fluid,
surrendering to the flow of life by moving continuously and
unpredictably. We soften any rigidity of the body and mind
and practice being receptive to what is. It is the rhythm of
birth and the feminine. Round and sensual. We let our feet
guide us through the earth and the rest of the body follows.
Staccato
Fire.
Definition. The expression and manifestation of who we
are, through our actions. The rhythm of the heart and
passion. It teaches us how we relate to the world. That place
where we are clear, focused, know our “yes and no’s” and set
our boundaries. It is the rhythm of the masculine and it is
driven by the pulsing beat that shapes us a thousand of
different ways.
Chaos
Water.
The rhythm of absolute surrender and a deep letting
go. We disappear in the dance but first our ego needs to get
out of the way. The dance happens without us controlling it.
We release and shake everything that we hold on to,
everything that burdens us. We celebrate the no mind state.
Chaos is the marriage of the feminine and the masculine.
Here we practice being awake, centred in the midst of world
that is falling apart. Things don’t all go as predicted and the
more freedom and surrender, the easier it becomes. We give
ourselves to the wilderness of a dance that can never be
planned and repeated.
Lyrical
Air.
When you really let go, you empty yourself and create
space for the new. Lyrical is the rhythm of transformation.
The weight of self-consciousness dissolves. A state of
lightness, detachment, newness, where many possibilities
are available, doors are open and our imagination is set free.
Nothing is fixed and there is a joy that comes with it. We are
reborn and the soul begins to play.
Stillness
Ether.
The rhythm of emptiness, where gentle movements
rise and fall, start and end, in a field of silence. We are full
but empty. Awake, wise and rejuvenated. The dance
becomes more of a prayer, a meditation. Spirit is moving us.
These rhythms provide us the opportunity to deepen
different aspects of ourselves. We all have our ways of being.
You may feel more comfortable with one rhythm than with
another. You will have the wonderful chance to expand and
stretch into your edges and awake all the parts of yourself
that have been less expressed. You can heal yourself of old
stories lodged in the body and remember the joyfulness of
being you.
Music
There is no particular music that is used in these classes.
These rhythms can be found in many different genres. In the
same wave class you may hear dance music, new age, rock,
pop, classical, percussion, ‘world music” – there are no
limits.
Welcome And Enjoy!
